Manual BeReal Download vs RealRetrieve — Honest Comparison

Bottom line: Manual downloading is free but takes an average of 2 minutes per photo — that's over 3 hours for 100 BeReals, over 13 hours for 400. RealRetrieve costs $7.99 and takes about 4 minutes of your time (plus waiting for BeReal to send your data). For anyone with more than 20 BeReals, RealRetrieve is faster.

You want your BeReal photos. The question is: how much is your time worth, and what features matter to you? This page gives you an honest comparison of both approaches — no hype.

The Two Methods

Method 1: Manual In-App Download

BeReal has a "Save to Camera Roll" button on each individual post. Tap it, and the photo saves to your phone. Repeat for every BeReal you've ever posted.

It works. It's free. And for a handful of photos, it's totally reasonable. For more than about 20 photos, it starts to become a significant time commitment.

Method 2: BeReal Data Export + RealRetrieve

BeReal's data export (triggered via GDPR request) delivers all your photos in bulk as a ZIP file. RealRetrieve converts the raw export into standard photo files with correct timestamps and locations, in BeReal's picture-in-picture format.

The Timestamp Problem

This is the detail most people don't realize until after manual downloading: when you save a BeReal to your camera roll using the in-app Save button, the photo is tagged with today's date — not the original post date. This means all your photos will appear in your camera roll as if they were taken on the day you downloaded them, not the day you actually took them.

RealRetrieve reads the original timestamp from your BeReal data export and embeds it into the output photo's EXIF metadata. When imported to Apple Photos or Google Photos, the photos appear in their correct chronological position.

The Format Difference

When you manually save a BeReal, you get whichever camera angle you're currently viewing — either the front camera shot or the back camera shot, but not the combined picture-in-picture that you see in the app.

RealRetrieve produces the combined BeReal format — the back camera as the main image with the front camera (or vice versa) as the small overlay in the corner. This is the format that actually looks like a BeReal.
